Within the framework of the UNESCO and the Italian Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the “UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme – WWAP”, under the overall supervision of the WWAP Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Water and Gender Programme Specialist in close collaboration with all members of the WWAP Secretariat, the Individual Specialist is requested to:
1. Revise and proofread the translated version (in Italian) of the United Nations World Water Development Report 2025 (UN WWDR 2025), before and after layout (approximate word count, including both rounds: 110,000 words):
i. Ensure consistency in translation and in referencing; and verify that all elements are in Italian;
ii. Clarify meaning where there may be confusion in interpretation, improve flow; and verify the correct use of water- and gender-related terminology;
iii. Ensure that the text is clean of typos, spelling, grammatical and syntax errors;
iv. Ensure accuracy of translation of names of institutions, organizations, groups, countries, etc.;
v. Verify that box, figure and table numbers are properly cited in the text, following the English version;
vi. Ensure that all titles, sub-titles, notes and sources are consistent with the English version; and that all disclaimers, credits and notes related to figures and tables are included and duly translated;
vii. Ensure that all blurbs, boxes, photo captions and text in figures are duly translated;
viii. Ensure that the list of acronyms of the Italian version corresponds to the English version, and edit it if required due to the different language (e.g. alphabetical order);
ix. Ensure that in-text references and the list of references of the Italian version correspond to the English version; ensure that the references, which are available in Italian, are replaced accordingly; and
x. Ensure that the list of references , footnotes and citations are formatted according to the style guide and integrate any missing information.
xi. Ensure that the style guide is applied throughout the report.
2. Revise the translated versions of the UN WWDR 2025 Executive summary (in Italian, Spanish and Russian; approx. 7,000 words for each language) and Facts and Figures (in Italian and Spanish; approx. 7,000 words for each language) before layout; and proofread the translated versions of the UN WWDR 2025 Executive Summary (in Italian, Spanish and Russian; approx. 7,000 words for each language) and Facts and Figures (In Italian and Spanish; approx. 7,000 words) after layout.
3. Revise the translated version (in Spanish) of the UN WWDR 2025, before layout (approximate word count, complete Report: 110,000 words):
i. Clarify meaning where there may be confusion in interpretation, improve flow; and verify the correct use of water- and gender-related terminology;
ii. Ensure that the text is clean of typos, spelling, grammatical and syntax errors;
iii. Ensure accuracy of translation of names of institutions, organizations, groups; verify that countries names in Spanish are in line with the UN terminology;
iv. Verify that box, figure and table numbers are properly cited in the text, following the English version;
v. Ensure that all titles, sub-titles, notes and sources are consistent with the English version; and that all disclaimers, credits and notes related to figures and tables are included and duly translated;
vi. Ensure that all blurbs, boxes, photo captions and text in figures are duly translated;
vii. Ensure that the list of acronyms of the Spanish version corresponds to the English version; edit it if required due to the different language (e.g. alphabetical order); and ensure that acronyms are cited in a consistent way throughout the report;
viii. Ensure that in-text references and the list of references of the Spanish version correspond to the English version; edit them if required due to the different language (e.g. alphabetical order); and ensure that the references, which are available in Spanish, are replaced accordingly; and
ix. Revise and edit if necessary front and back matter for language, grammar, syntax and style.
4. Assist WWAP Secretariat in revising the bibliography of the UN WWDR 2026 (original version in English; approx. 20,000 words) during the last stages of the drafting process.
5. Support WWAP Programme Specialist and Publication Assistant during the editorial process of the plurilingual glossary on water and gender terminology (intended for publication):
i. Develop dedicated content for the glossary, literature review and development of original content regarding inclusive language to be mainstreamed in publications and other relevant written resources if needed;
ii. Revise sections of the glossary in Italian, Russian and Spanish; clarify meaning where there may be confusion in interpretation, improve flow; and verify the correct use of water- and gender-related terminology; ensure that the text is clean of typos, spelling, grammatical and syntax errors; ensure accuracy of translation of names of institutions, organizations, groups and titles of publications.
6. Assist the WWAP Secretariat in the implementation of the capacity development programme in the Latin America and Central Asia regions:
i. Translation of briefs, PPTs, scripts and communication materials if required (English-Spanish-Russian);
ii. Assist senior officers to assess the development of the case studies done by the participants of the training programs;
iii. Assist in interpretation Russian-English in calls and meetings as required;
iv. Participate in the implementation of at least one workshop with technical officers of Central Asia to assess regional capacity development needs;
v. Support the development of a tailored capacity development programme on water and gender for Central Asia;
vi. Translate training modules to Russian as required.
Academic Qualifications
Advanced university degree (Master level) in languages, linguistics, literature or in a relevant field.
Technical Competencies and Experience Requirements
* Experience in revising and proofreading documents and text intended for publications on environmental affairs, gender-related topics and water resources in Spanish, Russian and Italian within UN context.
* Good knowledge of scientific and gender-related lexicons,
* Experience as trainer for online and face-to-face activities,
* Excellent grammatical knowledge in Spanish, Russian and Italian, excellent written and oral Spanish, Russian and Italian
* Good written and oral English
* Knowledge of the UN (and specifically UNESCO) style guides
* Good organizational, networking and partnership building skills.
* Ability to prioritize and deliver on deadline.
* Good IT skills. Being proficient in editing software is desirable
* Ability to adapt editing for different materials for different audiences
* Good skills and effectiveness in written and oral communication and presentation.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
