Overall responsibilities:

The Social Care Organiser is responsible for implementing PSI’s priorities relating to social care as outlined in PSI’s Programme of Action, and associated policies and strategies, including the implementation of related externally funded projects.

Duties

1. Sectoral and policy work

• Map and build relationships with affiliate unions, civil society and global institutions
• Map multinational companies active in the sector globally, and their relationships with organised labour
• Improve coordination and coordination mechanisms between PSI affiliates in the care sector
• Develop long term strategic objectives for the care sector to defend the rights and promote the interests of care workers, unions organising care workers and provision of care related quality public services, including union-membership growth strategies across public, private and ‘non-profit’ care operators
• Collaborate and coordinate with policy officers, regional and sub-regional offices to support unions, regional networks, regional action plans and capacity building in the sector
• Develop and implement campaigns, organise and mobilise affiliates, and build alliances and coalitions, including developing and delivering trade union training with a focus on South Asia
• Work with GUFs, non-affiliated unions, national union centres, civil society organisations, funding bodies, academia and other allies relevant to achieving objectives
• Collaborate and coordinate with PSI policy staff charged with health, local and regional government, gender equality and covid recovery to address the priorities in these areas of work as they relate to the care sector.

1. Reporting and communication

• Promote the work of PSI and its affiliates in the care sector externally
• Collect and communicate the experiences of workers and their unions in care
• Provide reports on activities and associated budgets to PSI structures and external donors
• Where relevant, maintain project monitoring tools and project reporting
• Provide media content for PSI Comms for mainstream and union-targeted communications
• Represent PSI to affiliates and in other fora where necessary

Selection criteria:

Content Expertise:

• At least 3 years’ experience in campaign coordination and/or organising within the trade union movement at the national, regional or global level
• Applicants with equivalent experience in a civil society or membership-based organisation and a demonstrated understanding of trade unions will be considered
• Experience in the context of public health or promotion of quality public services are a strong advantage, as is project management experience
• Proven academic & scientific expertise of public health
• Demonstrated understanding of the care sector and associated healthcare and public services
• An understanding of, or capacity to learn quickly about, global institutions that influence economic, health and labour policies
• A capacity to analyse and synthesise information from diverse sources and cultural and linguistic contexts

Skills and attributes:

• Demonstrated experience in public campaigning, organising and advocacy; demonstrated experience with political parties and/or health institutions required ;
• Network coordination skills and ability to coordinate in coalition building
• Knowledge of PSI work, documentation & values
• Demonstrated knowledge of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Indian health system & governance
• Ability to conduct and coordinate research to support advocacy
• Experience designing and delivering capacity-building programmes
• Project management skills
• Strong communication, advocacy and interpersonal skills
• Intercultural skills
• Strong time management and task coordination skills and ability to work in a changing and uncertain environment
• Ability to work under pressure and intercultural context, strict deadlines are expected to be respected
• Demonstrated experience drafting timely, accurate reports for internal and external accountability
• Demonstrated commitment to gender equality and experience working to advance gender equality within organisations or movements

Languages:

Ability to write and speak fluently in English and Urdu (native speaker). Other PSI languages are an advantage, with French, Spanish and Arabic highly desirable. Pashto is an asset.

Line management: The organiser will report to the General Secretary or delegate

Cross-functional links: The organiser will work closely with the General Secretary and his assistant who coordinates the care programme, the officers in charge of the local and regional government and health sectors, regional staff, and communications staff.

Conditions: Open to candidates ALREADY RESIDING IN SWITZERLAND or WITH THE RIGHT TO WORK in SWITZERLAND (Visa L, B, C or European National). PSI does not sponsor visas.

Salary: Permanent employment with salary based on experience. Additional benefits include a 13th month salary, comprising health coverage, pension contributions and unemployment contributions as per applicable Swiss Labor law.
